Week 4
Choose one stressor that you, or someone you know, experienced as a child. Share how you, or that person, coped with and/or compensated for that stressor?

"Poverty" & "Racism"   (Please forgive me EDU6160-However, I cannot talk about poverty unless I bring in "Racism"  because it seems, they always coincide with each other.  The famous Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted, "The three major evils are, poverty, racism, and war (Retrieved March 2020).

I believe there are two groups of people in society.  The wealthy and the poor. When I was growing up, I was poor. Some researcher may refer to it as, "The Have and the Have Nots." I want to know why the wealthy feel more powerful than poor people. As a child, I was bused to the west side of town in Amarillo.  Each morning the bus would pass by the enormous homes and lascivious cars in the neighorhood of the school I was attending. Needless to say, my neighborhood did not look the same.  I did not understand why?

I was pondering, "If my mom went to work every day, why we did live in a huge home or she drove a nice car." This made me feel insecure, quiet, and an inter pain in the pit of my stomach. I was in so much pain that I was determined to change my home living and life style when I grow up.  So, I knew the only way to change my stressor was to get as much education as I could.   I was determined to be one of the "Haves"  and not the "Have Nots."

  1. Hello,

I could not agree with you more! The poverty and racism definitely correlate. I also love that quote by Dr. Martin Luther King because of the truth it holds. I am inspired by your story! So many grow up in similar circumstances and it is so refreshing to see that it can bring out the best in people. Although my story is different, I can relate. I grew up in the middle. We were not rich, but we never went without during my young childhood years. Although that changed over time, I can say I was one of the lucky ones. It is a shame that either of these evils exist in our country, but they do.

  3. Hi Katrina,
I was attracted by your topic , “poverty and racism". You have rightly pointed out that wealthy feel more powerful than the poor. It is a harsh reality and a bitter truth. Katrina I am inspired by your story and the path you have chosen for yourself, "get higher education and change your and other's life". My father always said to me, you can conquer the world with 2 things 1) Education 2) Your attitude towards other.
