THE ECONOMICS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD INVESTMENTS

My Objective of this week is to: Understanding how economists, neuroscientists, or politicians support positive social change through the early childhood field?

Introduction of Childhood Investments:

The last several decades have brought tremendous strides in our understanding of early childhood development. Researchers have established that early childhood, beginning in infancy, is a period in which profound advances take place in individuals’ reasoning, language acquisition, and problem solving, and more importantly, that a child’s environment can dramatically influence the degree and pace of these advances. By supporting development when children are very young, early childhood education programs can complement parental investments and produce large benefits to children, parents, and society (obamawhitehouse.archives.gov).

Just as a regular citizen, I believe that politicians should be more passionate about ECE because they are the future.  If we educate the little people (birth-8 years old) at a young age, can become an  investments in early childhood development for children, their parents, and the society as a whole.

  1. Katrina,

I really enjoyed reading your post about the Obama White House and the I.N.V.E.S.T. acronym. What do you believe we could do to effectively invest in the children of the future? Do you believe it starts with funding, or policy change or even awareness? How can we make the needs of the children more visible to the country? I see a lot of media ads but it does not always highlight the needs of the children right here in our country.

  2. I agree with you. Politicians and other civic leaders should be invested and passionate about early childhood education. However, the policies has to be equitable so every one has a fair chance. They also need to listen to teachers in the field not just the ones who have the same interests as they do.

I agree that politicians should do more to invest in the field of early childhood for young children and families. I love the diversity that you have added this week with the children. I believe that INVEST is a great way to promote equality within young children in the field.

  4. Great Post! I agree with your post, we should invest in our children. Whitney Houston said it best "I believe the children are our future, teach the well and let them lead the way".
